HONG KONG, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu
Jintao recalled the historical process of Hong Kong's return to the motherland
at a gathering marking the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the
motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) here Sunday morning.
Hu said that Deng Xiaoping creatively put forward the
scientific concept of "one country, two systems" and personally oversaw China's
negotiation with Britain on Hong Kong and the drafting of the Basic Law of the
HKSAR, thus breaking a new ground in striving for China's peaceful
reunification.
Hu also expressed admiration to Jiang Zemin who made
historical contribution to the smooth handover and transition of Hong Kong and
the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" concept.
In his speech at the gathering, Hu also extended
gratitude to other fellow Chinese and foreign friends.
"I also want to take this opportunity to sincerely
thank all the fellow Chinese, both at home and abroad, and foreign friends who
care about Hong Kong and have contributed to its return and its continued
prosperity and stability."
President Hu arrived here Friday and will leave
Sunday.
