President Hu: "I'm even more confident about HK's future"

    HONG KONG, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Friday, "I'm sincerely happy about Hong Kong's achievements since returning to the motherland 10 years ago, and I'm even more confident about Hong Kong's future."

    Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks to reporters upon his arrival at the Hong Kong International Airport.

    Hu came here to attend celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the swearing-in ceremony of the third term government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

    He described the 10th return anniversary as a "happy event for Hong Kong and the whole country as well."

    The Chinese president said he brought with him the best wishes of the central government and all ethnic groups of the country for the Hong Kong compatriots.

    He said Hong Kong has over the past decade seen the successful implementation of the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people running Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy.

    The government of the HKSAR has united and led all the Hong Kong people in overcoming all sorts of difficulties and risks with the support of the central government and the people of the motherland, resulting in Hong Kong's progress and brilliant achievements, Hu said.

    He added that the HKSAR government has gained experience in successfully running Hong Kong under the principle of "one country, two systems."

    "I'm sincerely happy about Hong Kong's achievements since the return to the motherland 10 years ago, and I'm even more confident about Hong Kong's future," said the president.

    Hu said he is looking forward to witnessing Hong Kong's new changes, new developments and new progress and to sharing the happiness with the Hong Kong people on the occasion of the 10th return anniversary.
