PRAGUE, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has agreed
to include primeval beech forests of the Slovak and Ukrainian Carpathians in the
World Heritage List, the CTK news agency reported on Thursday.
The site was jointly nominated by Slovakia and neighboring Ukraine. The
primeval forests include four Slovak localities - three in the Poloniny
mountains and one in the protected area of Vihorlat.
Erik Balaz from the Slovak environmental group Vlk (Wolf) said that plants
in Poloniny and Vihorlat areas are unique as there is a habitat of fauna and
flora sensitive to human intervention.
"There are fungi and insects that need rotten wood for their existence," he
told CTK.
The primeval forests are the sixth Slovak site to be included on the World
Heritage List.
