BEIJING, June 27 -- A four-way summit has taken place
in Egypt. On Monday, gestures were made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to
push for peace in the Middle East. But his proposal was rejected by former Prime
Minister Ismail Haneya who was excluded from the summit after being sacked by
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
After visiting a school in Gaza City, Haneya
criticized the pledge made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday. The
pledge is for the release 250 Fatah prisoners from Israeli jails.
Haneya said, "We warn the Palestinian and Arab
leadership of danger beyond Olmert's policy, which aims to break the Palestinian
people's unity by driving wedges among them. The decisions he made are just to
throw dust in the eyes."
Instead, Haneya welcomed an invitation by Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak to reopen talks for unity under one Palestinian flag.
Haneya said, "We considered this invitation as
showing awareness of the current complications in the Palestinian territory,
which will never be solved without dialogue. We're ready to start this dialogue
immediately."
The four-way summit was held at the Egyptian Red Sea
resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. It was participated by Egypt, Jordan, Israel, as well
as the Palestinians.
The meeting was meant to act as a high-profile show
of support for Abbas and Fatah, which have been severely weakened when Hamas
took over the Gaza Strip.
