Hu urges overseas Chinese to speak up and support reunification of China

    BEIJING, June 22 -- President Hu Jintao has urged overseas Chinese to speak up and support China's stance on reunification. He made the call in a meeting with overseas Chinese delegates in Beijing.

    President Hu Jintao received the delegates to the 4th Conference for Friendship of Overseas Chinese Associations in Beijing on Wednesday.

    He welcomed the overseas guests and praised the achievements of overseas Chinese over the years.

    President Hu Jintao, said, "For a long period of time, overseas Chinese have made outstanding achievements through their hard work and perseverance. They have made brilliant contributions in every field."

    Hu Jintao said the overseas Chinese have played a significant role in China's opening-up and reform. They have also helped enhance friendship and understanding between China and other nations around the world.

    In addition, Hu Jintao urged Chinese expatriates to contribute more to world peace and development, while upholding the tradition of the Chinese people.

    Hu Jintao said, "The reunification of China has long been a wish for all Chinese people living abroad and requires the efforts of every Chinese."

    State councilor Tang Jiaxuan addressed the gathering at the opening ceremony.

    More than 450 representatives of Chinese expatriates from across the world attended the event.
