MOSCOW, June 14 (Xinhua) -- New RS-24 missile,
together with Topol-M mobile and stationary missile complexes, will guarantee
Russia's national security for the next 20-30 years, according to Russia's army
daily Krasnaya Zvezda published on Thursday.
In the next few years, Russia will start deploying
RS-24s, which will be capable of breaking through any existing or potential
missile defence shields, such as those planned by the United States, the daily
said, citing General Nikolai Solovtsov, the commander of strategic missile
forces.
The commander said RS-24s and Topol-Ms would become
the backbone of Russia's strategic forces, replacing existing RS-20 and RS-18
missiles when they were decommissioned.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who takes the
strengthening of armed forces as a top priority, has decided to choose strategic
missiles as Russia's key instruments to ensure the country's military security.
RS-24 is a new type of intercontinental missiles with
multiple warheads, which can be independently targeted, while the 22-meter-long
Topol-M is an intercontinental ballistic missile carrying a single
warhead.
