LOS ANGELES, June 11 (Xinhua) -- "Ocean's Thirteen" became the latest three-peat to score big at the weekend box office in North America as Hollywood's red-hot summer season cools off for the second straight weekend, according to final figures released here Monday.

Warner Bros' latest crime caper teaming George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon raked in 36.1 million dollars in its domestic debut, which occurred during a weekend that featured three other sequels-to-the-sequel in the top 10, Los Angeles-based box office tracker Media By Numbers reported.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third installment of the Disney's franchise, dropped to second place after a two-week reign, earning 21.1 million dollars.

Romance comedy "Knocked Up" was third with 19.6 million dollars, followed by two family animated films, Sony's new release "Surf's Up" with 17.6 million dollars and former box office crown holder "Shrek the Third" with 15.3 million dollars.

"Spider-Man 3" remained the runaway best seller this summer, maintaining a post of No. 8 at box office with 4.3 million dollars. The superhero film has grossed 326 million dollars domestically and 865 million dollar worldwide since its release in early May.

The 12 highest-grossing films generated a combined 130.4 million over the weekend, down about 11 percent from that during the same period a year ago. It represented the second straight down weekend for Hollywood's box office results, raising concerns about whether the industry's torrid pace in May could continue.

After a record 965 million dollars of box office revenue last month, thanks to the record-setting openings of blockbusters like "Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," ticket sales in North American theaters have slowed compare with the same period last year.

For Hollywood to live up to expectations and bank its first 4-billion-dollar summer season, the hits will need to keep coming, industry observers said.
