Special
report: Internal situation in
Palestine
GAZA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- As leaders of Palestinian
factions are negotiating in Cairo to agree on an internal cease-fire, the
infighting between rival Fatah and Islamic Hamas militants renewed on Saturday
in southern Gaza Strip.
Eyewitnesses said that armed clashes had suddenly
sparked between Hamas and Fatah militants in the western neighborhood of Tal
al-Sultan in Rafah town in southern Gaza Strip on Saturday evening.
The clashes took place when Hamas militants and
members of the interior ministry auxiliary force were seen seizing the roofs of
several buildings in the neighborhood, said the witnesses.
They said that Fatah militants blocked the roads with
sand barriers and stones.
However, each group had accused the other for being
responsible of sparking the infighting.
Doctors at Abu Yousef al-Najjar said that seven
Palestinians were shot and wounded, adding they are all in moderate conditions
and they were receiving the proper treatment.
The infighting sparked when both sides were trying to
implement an agreement reached on Thursday to end the fighting in the town.
Earlier in that day, a Fatah militant was shot dead
and 12 others were injured during clashes between the two groups. Egyptian
mediators interfered and managed to contain the infighting.
