Special Report: President Hu attends outreach session of G8 Summit, visits Sweden

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The Group of Eight (G8) industrialized nations Friday urged Iran to suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, and to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a statement issued at the conclusion of the three-day G8 summit at this German Baltic resort, the G8 said it is still committed to resolving the Iranian nuclear issue by diplomatic means.

However, the G8 said that it will "support adopting further measures, should Iran refuse to comply with its obligations" under UN Security Council resolutions 1696, 1737 and 1747.

"We again urge Iran to take the steps required by the international community, and made mandatory by these resolutions, to suspend all its enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, and allow negotiation to begin," said the statement.

It added that it fully supports resolutions adopted by IAEA on the Iranian nuclear issue and called on Iran to fully cooperate with the UN agency.

On Tuesday, just one day before the G8 summit opened, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier reported that no progress had been made on the Iranian nuclear issue after meeting with Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani in Berlin.

The European Union (EU) has been actively involved in nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Last week, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Larijani met in Madrid, and agreed to meet again in two weeks.

Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but the United States and some other Western countries have been accusing Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of its civilian nuclear program.

The G8 Leaders also voiced their support for the six-party talks through which the international community is making efforts to solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
