PRAGUE, Czech, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Around 500 Czechs
protested against the planned construction of a U.S. radar base in Rozmital pod
Tremsinem, near Brdy military training area, CTK reported on Tuesday.
They voiced their disagreement by chanting and
whistling. There were banners saying "No to Bases!" and "No Guantanamo in the
Brdy!".
Rozmital Mayor Josef Vondrasek (Communist, KSCM) told
journalists that he was glad that the rally was held during the visit by U.S.
President George W. Bush to Prague.
Vondrasek stressed that local residents would be able
to voice their opinion on the planned radar base in a local referendum scheduled
for the weekend.
The leader of the KSCM Vojtech Filip, whose party
organized the rally, said it protested against Bush's visit, according to CTK.
Bush called for cooperation from his Russian
counterpart Vladimir Putin here Tuesday on the deployment of a planned U.S.
missile defense shield in the Czech Republic and Poland after his talks with his
Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus and Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek in
Prague.
