BEIJING, June 1(Xinhuanet) -- U.S. actresses Meg
Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing and Candice
Bergen are teaming up for a remake of the 1939 classic "The Women," according to
media reports Friday.
Based on the Clare Booth Luce play
of the same name, the comedy is justly famous for its all-female cast and deft
direction by George Cukor. The plot centers on a group of gossipy, high-society
women who spend their days at the beauty salon and haunting fashion shows.
Things take a downhill turn when one of the women discovers that her husband has
been cheating on her.
The remake will be directed by Diane English, who has
spent more than 10 years trying to get the project off the ground.
It will be produced by Jagged Pictures partners
Victoria Pearman and Sir Mick Jagger, and has reportedly been part funded by the
cosmetics company Dove.
There have been numerous attempts at a remake before,
but these were shelved amid concerns that the film would prove too difficult to
update.
Meg Ryan is best known for her breathtaking role in
"When Harry Met Sally," while Annette Bening has received three Oscar
nominations for "Being Julia," "American Beauty" and "The Grifters."
Eva Mendes starred in comic book adaptation "Ghost
Rider," and Will Smith's wife Jada appeared in two thirds of the "Matrix"
trilogy.
