BRUSSELS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said here on Wednesday she hoped that the leaders at the upcoming G-8 summit can reach some consensus on climate change, showing signs of moving away from the traditional U.S. policy on the issue.

Speaking at a press conference after she held talks with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Pelosi indicated support for the position of the European Union (EU) for binding targets on emissions cuts.

She said the EU initiatives on climate change has set up "model" for debate across the Atlantic.

"I would hope that all countries would join in establishing a standard so that we can be a model to developing world," she said, cautioning that that she had not come to Europe "to discuss differences with the administration."

Although the speaker did not 100 percent agree with the EU on climate change, she said "many areas (on climate change) can be reached" at the upcoming G-8 summit, citing that carbon trade, energy efficiency and conservation measures.

Barroso said they have reached comprehensive, though not complete agreement on the issue.

He noted that he hoped that the G-8 summit of next week will agree that a long-term new global agreement on climate change can be reached by 2012, and negotiations on the new pact can be launched at the climate change, to be held in Indonesia in December.

On June 6-8, G8 summit in Germany is expected to focus on global warming. The U.S. administration has rejected the EU's demands to set binding targets.
