Special report: Internal situation in Palestine
GAZA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa al-Barghouti urged the international Quartet for Middle East peace on Wednesday to recognize the unity government and lift siege on the Palestinian people.
Al-Barghouti, also the spokesman for the Palestinian unity government which comprises members of Hamas, Fatah and independents, called on the Middle East Quartet to deal with all members of the government.
The Quartet, which groups the United States, the European Union(EU), Russia and the United Nations, will hold a high-level meeting in Berlin on Wednesday to evaluate the situation more than two months after the formation of the Palestinian coalition.
The EU has decided to limit deals with Palestinian ministers who are affiliated with Hamas, which leads the Palestinian coalition government and refuses to meet the Quartet's demands of renouncing violence, recognition of Israel and signed deals, the three conditions of the Quartet to end financial and political boycott imposed on the Palestinian people.
But al-Barghouti said the government is working to achieve peace with Israel, asking the Quartet to pressurize Israel to accept an offer by the Palestinian cabinet aimed at ending offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The initiative calls for a mutual ceasefire with Israel to halt military operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in exchange for stopping Palestinian rocket attacks against Israel.
Meanwhile, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said the government should secure truce with Israel and overcome security anarchy in order to succeed, adding that President Mahmoud Abbas hopes the same.
