BERLIN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed here
Tuesday to press ahead for binding targets to combat global warming before the
summit of Group of Eight (G8) nations.
"We need multilateral agreements to deal on a global basis with the
challenges facing humanity," Merkel said after meeting visiting U.S. House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
She said the United States was "moving a lot" on climate change, but made
no reference to the differences threatening to abort a deal at the June 6-8
summit in the Baltic resort of Heilingendamm.
Pelosi urged for "global and sustainable solutions" to halt global warming,
including making greater use of advanced technologies.
The United States will reportedly block a declaration on global warming at
the summit as the George W. Bush administration opposes a proposal by Germany to
curb greenhouse gas emissions to 50 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2020.
Germany, which takes the fight against climate change as one of its
priorities during its G8 presidency, has vowed to fight to the end for a climate
change declaration.
Merkel will make a last-minute effort by meeting Bush right before the
summit opens on June 6.
