LONDON, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Group of Eight (G8) industrial countries should foot most of the bill for tackling climate change,as the problem is the result of their pollution, Oxfam said Tuesday.
The G8 should cough up 50 billion U.S. dollars to help developing countries deal with global warming, the international development agency said in a report.
The report said the United States should pay 43.7 percent of the cost, Japan 12.9 percent, Germany 7.1 percent, Britain 5.3 percent, Italy 4.6 percent, France 4.5 percent and Canada 4.3 percent, according to their respective gas emissions from 1992 and payment ability.
The report said developed countries should take their responsibility to remedy the pollution they have caused, rather than force the total cost upon under-developed countries, which were less responsible for the global warming.
The report was released ahead of the G8 summit in Germany on June 6-8.
