CAIRO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa stressed on Monday that only dialogue and political solutions could resolve the Lebanese stand-off and realize stability there.
Egypt's official MENA news agency quoted Moussa as saying that his pan-Arab organization will keep its support for realizing stability in Lebanon.
As fighting between the Lebanese troops and the Fatah al-Islam faction militants around the Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon entered the second day on Monday, killing some 57 people, including 27 soldiers.
While deploring the clashes, Moussa warned of a dangerous indication by attacking the Lebanese army which is a representative of national sovereignty.
He, meanwhile, cautioned of the repercussions of a political split in Lebanon and called on Lebanese leaderships to close ranks in the face of challenges besetting the country.
The AL chief expressed that he was holding contacts and consultations with the parties concerned to follow up the situation in Lebanon.
Earlier in the day, Moussa met and held talks with UN chief envoy to Lebanon Terje Roed-Larsen.
Larsen said his meeting with Moussa took up the overall situation in Lebanon and they expressed concern over the current situation in northern Lebanon after the outbreak of acts of violence there.
He also called on all political parties in Lebanon to act in a wise and responsible way to avert further deterioration of the situation in the country.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak also met Larsen on Monday to discuss a UN report on steps taken so far to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1559 on Lebanon, which demands foreign troops withdraw from the country.
The UN Security Council will convene on May 29 to probe the report which is presented to the Security Council every six months.
The fighting between the Lebanese troops and militants around a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon started at dawn on Sunday.
The conflict took place after Lebanese security forces raided homes in the refugee camp to arrest suspects in a bank robbery happened in the previous day, during which four masked gunmen robbed a bank in the northern town of Amioun and made off with 125,000 U.S. dollars in cash.
