MADRID, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Friday urged the United Nations to play a more active role in all conflicts, including the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
During a meeting with Mohamed El Baradei, general director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Zapatero said the European Union (EU) should also get more involved in dispute over Iran's nuclear program, where it should favor dialogue.
El Baradei, visiting Madrid's Complutense University, said he hoped Europe would get more involved in Iran's nuclear issue.
He said he is grateful for initiatives like the Alliance of Civilizations because they ease talks between the western hemisphere and the Islamic world.
In a communique, Spain said it agreed with the work carried out by the IAEA and believes it is very important to solve Iran's nuclear conflict.
"Spain continues to believe the diplomacy is the only means to satisfactorily find a solution for all parties, therefore Iran can practice its right to the peaceful use of atomic energy as long as international security is guaranteed," the communique said.
