LOS ANGELES, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Sony's "Spider-Man 3"
continued to rule worldwide box office 10 days after it was released, taking in
a total of 622 million dollars in ticket sales globally, its distributor said
Sunday.
The third installment of the comic book film
adaptation netted 60 million dollars this weekend in U.S. and Canada to remain
atop the box office for the second straight week, according to preliminary
weekend figures.
The film has raked in an estimated 242 million
dollars in North America since opening last Friday, when it set the record for
the biggest single-day domestic take with 59.8 million dollars, said the Los
Angeles-based box office tracker Media by Numbers.
It also broke domestic box office records for its
opening weekend, with 151 million dollars, and set new box office records in 29
countries, including Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, Italy, Mexico and
Brazil.
"Spider-Man 3" has become the top-grossing film so
far this year in North America, overtaking Warner Bros.' battle epic "300,"which
has taken in 208 million dollars.
Sony officials said the film would also have a shot
at reaching the 1-billion-dollar mark worldwide, a success that has been
archived only by three other movies: "Titanic," "The Lord of the Rings: The
Return of the King" and last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's
Chest."
Fox Atomic's sci-fi horror sequel "28 Weeks Later"
debuted in second with an estimated 10 million dollars, while Universal's "
Georgia Rule" and Liongate comedy "Delta Farce" opened in third and fifth, with
5.9 million and 3.5 million dollars respectively.
Paramount thriller "Disturbia," which was toppled
from the top spot by Spider-Man, came in fourth this week with about 4.8 million
dollar. The film was No. 2 last week.
Final box office figures will be released Monday.
The highest-grossing dozen films in North America
raked in a combined 96.9 million dollars over the weekend, a 14 percent jump
from the same period a week earlier, largely thanks to Spider-Man's reign over
the box office.
But the web-slinging hero is expected to be dethroned soon as Dreamworks Animation's "Shrek 3" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" arrive in theaters in coming two weeks.
