OTTAWA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people are being evacuating from their homes in southeastern Canada as a wildfire in the United States spreads northwards across the border.
Police and forestry officials on Saturday shepherded hundreds of people out of a remote area in Ontario. A wider sparsely-populated area encompassing 400 to 500 cottages was also under evacuation alert, police said Sunday.
Officials estimated that the fire, that originated in Minnesotain the United States, had scorched about 100 square km on the Canadian side of the border.
Roads into the area have been blocked and nobody is being allowed in. Provincial officials were in the process of preparing efforts to actually fight the fire.
