ISLAMABAD, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf said Saturday there was no need to impose emergency in the country and urged the nation to stand united and peaceful.

"There is absolutely no requirement and absolutely no environment for taking such drastic measure so these undercurrents must stop," Musharraf said while speaking about rumors of imposition of an emergency in the country.

The official APP news agency quoted Musharraf as saying that the matter of reference against the chief justice of Pakistan sent to the Supreme Judicial Council should not be politicized.

"Let the Supreme Court decide in the interest of the state and absolute justice," he said.

Musharraf assured the nation that there was no requirement of any drastic step at all. Terming the matter a "temporary irritant", he said that there was an economic boom and there was a need to sustain economic growth in the country.

"We must stop taking this issue on to the streets and making it into a political issue," Musharraf said.
