Security situation in Iraq not so bad: top official

    BERLIN, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Defense Minister Abdel Qader Jassim Obeidi said here Wednesday that the security situation in his country was not as bad as it was often reported.

    There was terrorist activity in only four of Iraq's 18 provinces, Obeidi said after meeting his German counterpart Franz Josef Jung at a Berlin military base.  Full story

Death toll rises to 20 in truck bomb attack in Iraq's Kurdistan

    BAGHDAD, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll rose to 20, with 70 others wounded, when a suicide truck bomb struck the building of a Kurdish regional ministry in Iraq's northern city of Arbil on Wednesday, local police said.

    "Latest report said that 20 people were killed and 70 others injured, including interior ministry employees," a source from the city police said, citing report from the Kurdish regional Health Ministry.   Full story 

Cheney to visit four Mideast nations next week

    WASHINGTON, May 3 (Xinhua)-- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney isdue to visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan on May 8-14, the White House announced Thursday.

    During his one-week visit, Cheney will meet with UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and Jordan's King Abdullah II, Cheney's office said in a statement. Full story

Taliban: bin Laden plans attack targeting Cheney

    BEIJING, April 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Osama bin Laden personally ordered and managed a February suicide attack targeting U.S. vice president Dick Cheney during his visit to Afghanistan, a top Taliban commander said in an interview aired by Al-Jazeera Wednesday.

    Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban's main military commander in southern Afghanistan, said Bin Laden was behind the suicide blast that killed 23 people outside the Bagram U.S. military base on Feb. 27, while Cheney was there.  Full story

Bush, Iraqi PM discuss Iraq situation

    WASHINGTON, May 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush hada video teleconference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki onMonday about the situation in Iraq, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.

    During the conversation, Bush congratulated Maliki for the just-concluded Iraq conference held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt and Maliki thanked Bush for his support, Snow said.  Full story
