MOSCOW, May 9 (Xinhua) -- There's no gun salute nor laying flowers ceremony, but one day free, plus canned food and video film, for the three Russian and United States astronauts working in the International Space Station (ISS) to enjoy the VE Day holiday on Wednesday.
"The 15th resident crew have a day off today. They only have to do routine daily maintenance work," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted a spokesman for the Moscow-based Mission Control Center as saying.
Many countries, including Russia, have celebrated the VE Day, marking the Allies' victory on the European front in World War II in 1945, on May 8 and May 9. Russia held a military parade on the Red Square for the occasion on Wednesday morning.
It is the first holiday for Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchukhin and Oleg Kotov, who went aboard the ISS in April 9. Their NASA colleague, Sunita Williams, who stared working there last December, has enjoyed several public holidays with the previous crew.
The crew usually save some daily food for holiday dinners or suppers and they could lay a table by combining different menus of Russian and U.S. cuisine though the next supply, including gifts from families and fresh fruits, was to be delivered there next week by a Russian Progress transport spacecraft.
On VE Day, the crew will have a chance to talk with families and watch the film Officers, one of the most popular films about the war in Russia, Itar-Tass said.
According to NASA-Russian agreements, the current resident crew will have only four holidays: VE Day on May 9, U.S. Memorial Day on May 28, Day of Russia on June 12, and U.S. Independence Day on July 4.
