Over 700 vehicles burnt on night of French Presidential run-off: police

    PARIS, May 7 (Xinhua) -- A total of 730 vehicles were burnt on the night of Sunday to Monday following the French presidential run-off, according to the latest announcement made by the head office of national police (DGPN) on Monday.

    According to DGPN, 592 persons had been questioned for the involvement in the incidents.

    Besides, 78 police officers and gendarmes were injured over the night.

    On Sunday night, Sarkozy, candidate of the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) was elected president of France during the run-off of the presidential elections with 53.1 percent of all valid votes against 46.9 percent for Socialist candidate Segolene Royal.

    After his victory, Sarkozy said he will be president of all the French people. "This evening, it is not a victory of one France against another. There is only one victory for me, that of democracy," the president-elect said.
