GAZA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haneya met here Sunday night and discussed the
security situation in the Palestinian territories, a senior Palestinian official
said.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman of Palestinian
Presidency told reporters following Abbas and Haneya's two-hour meeting in Gaza
that "the meetings will be resumed within the coming days."
"On Monday, there will be a series of meetings in the
morning and the evening to follow up the issues both had agreed upon in
tonight's meeting," Abu Rudeineh said.
He added that the meetings would tackle issues
related to the Mecca agreement reached between the two rival mainstream
movements of Fatah and Hamas on Feb. 8, the performance of the national unity
government and the issue of security chaos.
Interior Minister Hani el-Qawasmeh and deputy premier
Azzam el-Ahmed also attended the meeting held at Abbas' Gaza headquarters.
Abbas arrived in Gaza earlier on Sunday evening to
discuss with Haneya a security plan presented by the United States to both
Israel and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), sources at Abbas' office
said.
The sources added that Abbas discussed with Haneya
the U.S. plan that calls on the Palestinians to halt attacks on Israel for
easing Israeli restrictions imposed on the Palestinians' free movement.
Abbas also discussed with Haneya the implementation
of a security plan to restore order in the Palestinian territories and a pending
letter of resignation that el-Qawasmeh presented to Haneya last week, according
to the sources.
