LONDON, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Five men were given life
sentence on Monday after being found guilty of planning bomb attacks in Britain
which had targeted a shopping center, nightclub and the gas network.
Among the five, Omar Khyam, had met the July 7
suicide bombers and boasted of working for the number three in al Qaida, the
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported on Monday evening.
Michael Astill who has presided over the year-long
trial, which was one of the biggest and most expensive one in British criminal
history, said the men, all British citizens, had "betrayed their country."
Peter Clarke, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the
Metropolitan Police, noted that the men "were trained, dedicated, ruthless
terrorists who were obviously planning to carry out an attack against the
British public."
Police cracked the bomb plot in 2004 after MI5, the
security service, had watched an Islamic extremist network with links across the
world.
Investigation into the bomb plot linked back to
senior al-Qaida figures in Pakistan and Afghanistan, including one who was
detained by U.S. forces in Iraq at the weekend, said the report.
The 25-year-old Khyam was found guilty of conspiring
to cause explosions likely to endanger life between January 2003 and March of
2004. ¡¡
