COLOMBO, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan defense officials said Thursday a Tamil Tiger position in the island's north has been bombed by its fighter bombers.
The Air Force jets bombed a position east of Kilinochchi, a town held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Northern Province at around 8:00 a.m. local time (0230 GMT), an official at the Media Center for National Security said.
The targeted location was a point where the LTTE's leadership usually meets and the damage caused to the Tigers was not known, the official added.
Sri Lankan Air Force regularly pounds Tamil Tiger positions in the north and east, an exercise necessary to weaken the LTTE's striking capability against the troops, according to officials.
The LTTE on their part have carried out two separate air raids by their own air capability on troops positions.
In late March they dropped two bombs at the main air base in Colombo while during the early hours of Tuesday they targeted the main air base in the northern Jaffna peninsula.
Government troops and LTTE rebels are currently being locked in fierce battles in the island country's north and east.
More than 4,000 people have been killed since December 2005 despite a Norwegian-arranged truce in place.
The LTTE has been fighting for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka's 12.5 percent Tamil minority since the 1970s.
