BRUSSELS, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Dutch football club
Groningen made sure of a place in the UEFA Cup play-offs with victory over ADO
Den Haag in their delayed Eredivisie clash, which was played in Emmen on
Wednesday.
The match was originally scheduled to take place last
Sunday, but was halted after 48 minutes due to ADO fans throwing fireworks onto
the pitch.
The remaining 42 minutes were then played on
Wednesday, with Ron Jans' Groningen holding a 3-0 lead.
The visitors had opened the scoring after 10 minutes
of Sunday's aborted match when Erik Nevland headed home.
That led to the first firework being thrown onto the
field, causing play to be suspended for 20 minutes.
Once it resumed, Groningen scored a second in the
25th minute through Goran Lovre before Nevland added a third just before
half-time.
A second firework was thrown onto the field three
minutes into the second half and as trouble broke out in the crowd, the
officials led the players off the field.
The remainder of the match was then played behind
closed doors and at the neutral ground of Jupiler League outfit Emmen, but it
produced just one more goal with Laurent Delorge scoring a consolation for
already-relegated ADO five minutes from time.
The result moves eighth-placed Groningen six points
clear of FCUtrecht with just one round left of the regular season.
