BEIJING, April 23 -- The first Twins Festival
in southern China's Guangdong province will be held from April 22 to May 31,
2007, in order to celebrate the birth of the world's only existing koala twins
in a local wildlife park.
China News Service reports that 100 pairs of
twins participated in the event on Sunday. Their ages range from 6 months to 56
years old.
The twin koalas, born in Xiangjiang Safari Park
in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, made their first public appearance on April
17, 2007.
Records show there have only been one pair of
twin koalas in history before. They were born in an Australian college
laboratory in 1960. The new-born twins are the only ones naturally-born, and the
only pair existing today.
It is reported that Hong Kong pop star duet
Twins are contacting the park, and that they are eager to pay the living
expenses of the twin koalas in the future.
Besides the Twins Festival, an exhibition on
animal twins will also be held in the park. Rare animal twins including pandas,
white tigers, and lemurs, will be exhibited.
