Special report: Deadliest U.S. college massacre

    WASHINGTON, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Virginia Governor Tim Kaine on Thursday named an independent panel to investigate the shooting rampage that killed 33 people at Virginia Tech.

    The review panel will be headed by Gerald Massengill, a former Virginia police chief, and will include Tom Ridge, former Homeland Security secretary, and an FBI veteran.

    The group would investigate the shootings, the authorities' responses to the first shooting spree that killed two persons Monday at a dormitory room, and the gunman's dealings with the mental health system.

    Cho Seung-Hui, a Virginia Tech senior majoring in English who moved to the United States when he was eight years old, shot 32 teachers and students dead on Monday morning at the state university, which is located in Blacksburg, in the southwest of Virginia.

    He killed himself after the shooting rampage, the deadliest in U.S. history.
