MONTEVIDEO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan cyclist Jorge Bravo on Sunday won
the 64th Tour of Uruguay, the main local competition and South America's oldest,
beating a field of 120 including Argentines, Brazilians, Cubans and Uruguayans.
Bravo, riding for Cruz del Sur (Southern Cross), has been in first place
since Wednesday when he won the time trial in the fifth stage, from a total of
10.
Bravo was part of the leading group as it crossed the Montevideo finish
line, which allowed him to maintain his eight-second winning lead over
Argentina's Sebastian Cancio, of local club Villa Teresa.
Visibly moved, Bravo received hugs from teammates, for his 31 hour 38
minute 24 second finishing time over the 1,500-km race that began on March 30.
Uruguayan Richard Mascaranas, from Alas Rojas (Red Wings), came third, 14
seconds behind the leader. Cuba's Daniel Fuentes, from Southern Cross, was
fourth, 18 seconds behind the lead. Argentina's Cristian Clavero, from
Maldonado, was fifth, 57 seconds behind the lead.
Brazil's Francisco Chamorro, from Brazilian team Sundown, won the final
stage, with a time of 4:01:26 over 144.5 km Sarandi Grande-Montevideo stage,
averaging 35.9 kph and defeating strong headwind, which lasted all morning.
Clavero came second in the stage, and Uruguay's Diego Fernandez, riding for
local team Fenix, came third.
Thousands of Montevideo residents took the streets at noon to give the
traditional welcome to the cyclists who covered every Uruguayan department
during Easter Week.
