GAZA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) voiced on Sunday its support to form a council for national security in order to unify security services under one umbrella.
"The national security council must be formed to oversee the work of security agencies," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoom told reporters in Gaza.
Barhoom made the remarks as newly founded Palestinian coalition government has discussed a new plan to restore security in 100 days.
"The interior minister's plan needs supervision and sponsorship of the security council to create a stable situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank," said Barhoom.
Hundreds of Palestinians were killed in the last couple of years due to power struggle between Hamas and Fatah movements who finally allied with each other.
Barhoom, meanwhile, confirmed progress on talks to exchange an Israeli captive for Palestinian prisoners, saying "the ball is now in Israel's field after the Egyptian side has handed over to Israel the prisoners' lists."
He called on Israel to "respect the efforts of the Egyptians and the demands of the captors."
