RIO DE JANEIRO, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Soccer forward Romario continued to disappoint fans by not scoring his 1,000th league goal, after scoring his 999th on March 25, against local league rival Flamengo.

Fans of Romario will have to wait until May, as the 41-year-old forward of Brazilian team Vasco de Gama is not set to pay in the team's next games.

Vasco de Gama lost 2-1 on Wednesday, to modest rival Gama, in their home Maracana stadium, and was eliminated from the Brazil Cup.

Parties in the stadium and in the city of Rio de Janeiro were halted, because the much-awaited 1,000th goal never arrived. Romario had booked a disco for his celebration.

Gama goalkeeper Juninho told media he was happy to have stopped what might have been the 1000th goal twice in two weeks: the teams have played twice in 10 days.

"Fate did not wish Romario to score the goal while I was keeping goal," he said.

Thousands of fans left the team's stadium in unhappy silence.

Sports commentators said that Romario has not been able to score because goalkeepers are keen not to be the one that let in goal number 1,000. The player was part of the 1994 World Cup winning team in the United States.
