5 dead in tsunami in Papua New Guinea

    CANBERRA, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The tsunami sparked by a strong earthquake off the Solomon Islands has reportedly killed up to five people in neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG).

    The quake with a magnitude 8.0 took place at 20:40 GMT Sunday with the epicenter located 45 km south of the New Georgia Islands, and around 350 km west-northwest of the capital of Honiara, at a depth of 10 km. Full story

4 New Zealanders missing after Solomon Islands tsunami

    WELLINGTON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Four New Zealanders are missing after a tsunami hit the Solomon Islands Monday wiping out entire villages, said New Zealand media.

    Stuff, a local news service, said Tuesday the four have not been in contact since a huge earthquake triggered the tsunami which struck outlying islands in the impoverished South Pacific state, killing at least 15 people. Full story

Tsunami hits Solomon Islands, 4 missing

    BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhuanet) -- A tsunami wave several meters high reportedly crashed into the west coast of the Solomon Islands Monday morning following a strong undersea earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale in the South Pacific Ocean, media reported.

    WELLINGTON, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of magnitude 8 struck Monday near the coast of the Solomon Islands, spurring a tsunami warning for Australia and South Pacific island nations.

    The quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale happened at 0740 local time on Monday (2040 GMT Sunday), 45 kilometers (25 miles) south-southeast of Gizo in the New Georgia archipelago and 345 kilometers west-northwest of Honiara, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tsunami alert issued after Solomons earthquake

    CANBERRA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A tsunami alert has been issued for the east coast of Australia after an earth tremor measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Solomon Islands on Monday morning.

    The Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying there is a possible tsunami threat to the coast of Queensland state. Full story
