    KIEV, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian Prime Minister has defied a presidential decree to dissolve parliament, which went into effect on Tuesday, and threatened to force an early presidential election.

    Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich told an emergency session of parliament that the decree by President Viktor Yushchenko was a "fatal mistake" and urged legislators to keep working.  Full story


Ukrainian parliament calls for constitutional court ruling on Yushchenko's decree

    KIEV, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian parliament overnight appealed for a ruling by the constitutional court on the legitimacy of the president's order to dissolve the parliament, the Interfax news agency reported.

    The Interfax reported that 262 lawmakers of the total 450 voted in favor of calling on the court to examine the issue within five days.

    Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree on Monday to dissolve the parliament and called new parliamentary elections on May 27.

    The decree would have been effective only if it was published in the official newspaper.  Full story
