Taliban attack leaves 3 Afghan police dead

    KABUL, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants attacked police checkpoint in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province early Monday leaving three policemen dead, provincial police chief Asmatullah Alizai said.

    "A group of armed Taliban insurgents raided police post on Spinboldak-Kandahar city road killing three policemen and wounding two others," Alizai told Xinhua.

    Policemen also returned fire and inflicted casualties on the rebels, he added.

    Meantime, he added that six Taliban fighters were killed in Jalai district of Kandahar province on Sunday when government forces stormed them.

    Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 600 people so far this year in Afghanistan.
