People reportedly missing after Solomon Islands earthquake

WELLINGTON, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson for the Solomon Islands Office of Emergency management said Monday there were unconfirmed reports five people were missing after two villages were inundated by the tsunami in the far west of the archipelago.

    WELLINGTON, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of magnitude 8 struck Monday near the coast of the Solomon Islands, spurring a tsunami warning for Australia and South Pacific island nations.

    The quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale happened at 0740 local time on Monday (2040 GMT Sunday), 45 kilometers (25 miles) south-southeast of Gizo in the New Georgia archipelago and 345 kilometers west-northwest of Honiara, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tsunami alert issued after Solomons earthquake

    CANBERRA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A tsunami alert has been issued for the east coast of Australia after an earth tremor measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Solomon Islands on Monday morning.

    The Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying there is a possible tsunami threat to the coast of Queensland state. Full story
