TEHRAN, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad on Sunday renewed his promise that Iranians would soon hear good
news on Iran's nuclear success, the official IRNA news agency reported.
President Ahmadinejad on Sunday renewed his former
statement on success of the nuclear program by saying that "the people will hear
good news in this respect", IRNA said.
IRNA gave no more details about Ahmadinejad's
remarks, but said that the president made the remarks at Abadan airport in the
southwestern province of Khuzestan after he wrapped up his visit to the oil-rich
province.
Addressing a mass rally in Tehran on Feb. 11 marking
the 28th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad said that Tehran
would make major announcements on its nuclear program by April 9.
Many observers had previously expected that
Ahmadinejad would make a big announcement concerning Iran's nuclear progress
during his Feb. 11 speech, probably Iran had started installing 3,000
centrifuges at its Natanz nuclear plant for enrichment program. However, the
president did not make such an announcement.
According to IRNA, Iranian nuclear program is
currently at research and development level to produce fuel for the power
plants, primary stage of which needs commissioning of at least 1,000
centrifuges.
Iran has planned to establish 20 nuclear power plants
with total capacity of 20,000 megawatts by 2015 to meet the growing demand for
electricity, IRNA said.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted on March
24 a new resolution with tougher sanctions to pressure Iran to suspend uranium
enrichment activities.
Iran has refused to heed the Security Council's
demand, insisting that its nuclear programs are for peaceful purposes only.
The United States and some other Western countries
have accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of its
civilian nuclear programs.
