MADRID, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Wong Kam-Po of Chinese Hong Kong, took the
gold of the men's 15-km scratch race at the world track cycling championships in
Palma de Mallorca, Spain on Friday.
Wong made a daring dash eight laps from the finishing line to reap the
glory, beating Wim Stroetinga of the Netherlands and Poland's Rafal Ratajczyk to
second and third respectively.
The 34-year-old Wong thus opened up a substantial lead over the other 21
riders as they hesitated over how to respond, and some of them were even
involved in a mass pile-up.
"I came here to ride the points race, but my coach told me to ride the
scratch race as well," Wong told reporters. "I thought maybe I could win because
I was under no pressure.
"My coach told me before the race that I had just one chance and I had to
take it. I tried and tried and knew I couldn't relax."
"For me it is perfect. I've won a lot in Asia, but although I've opened the
Asian door I've never managed to open the world one and this time I've done it."
