WASHINGTON, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The United States is
not seeking confrontation with Iran and believes diplomacy is the way to
proceed, U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said Thursday.
"We're convinced diplomacy is the way to proceed. We
are most definitely on a diplomatic track. We do not believe that conflict with
Iran is inevitable. We need to be patient and persistent," Burns said while
testifying at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Although the United States has dispatched two
aircraft carriers to the Gulf region, "they are not there to provoke any kind of
conflict with Iran," Burns said.
The United States has insisted that it focuses on
diplomacy while trying to resolve Iran's nuclear issue, although it is
increasing pressure on the regime.
The United States has accused Iran of trying to
develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran has
denied the charges.
WASHINGTON, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The United States said on
Wednesday it is not escalating tensions with Iran and insisted that the naval
exercises in the Gulf has been long planned.
"There is no escalation of tensions on our part," White
House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said at a briefing.
As to the naval exercises held in the Gulf region, Perino
said the exercises had been long planned, adding that President George W. Bush
ordered the deployment of a second aircraft carrier in the Gulf in his Jan. 10
