    RIYADH, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Arab leaders agreed to reactivate a Saudi-proposed Arab peace initiative without any modification during a closed-door session on Wednesday, local media quoted a well-informed Arab League official as reporting.

    The leaders, convening in Riyadh for the 19th Arab summit, called for activating the peace initiative, which was adopted in Beirut summit in 2002, aiming at reinforcing an Arab effort to end the Arab-Israeli conflict, the source said on condition of anonymity.

    The peace initiative calls for Israel's pullout from Arab land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in return for the normalization of ties with Arab.

    In addition, the source disclosed that the summit also approved several other resolutions, but did not elaborate.

    Leaders or representatives from 22 member states of the Arab League, except Libya, met here for a two-day summit to ponder the draft resolutions that a foreign ministerial meeting had submitted to them. Full Sotry

    UN chief speaks out six common goals with AL to maintain peace in Mideast

     RIYADH, March 28 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday put forward at the opening session of the 19th Arab summit six common goals with the Arab League (AL) in a bid to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.

    "Our two organizations (the UN and the AL) are close partners. As we move ahead, let us remember goals that have the power to unite countries and people throughout the region," Ban said while delivering a speech before the Arab leaders. Full story

    RIYADH, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Arab leaders on Wednesday kicked off the 19th Arab League summit in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, with Arab peace initiative, Middle East security, the Iraq issue high on the agenda.

    The conference, which started at 1:20 p.m. (1020 GMT) at Abdulaziz International Conference Center, brought together 17 heads of state of the 22-member pan-Arab bloc. Full story
