UNITED NATIONS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia suggested on Tuesday the UN Security Council to have a comprehensive review of the implementation of the resolution concerning the issue of Kosovo.

"Today in the Council, we made two suggestions. First we suggest that the Security Council request a comprehensive review of the implementation of resolution 1244," Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The resolution, which was adopted in 1999, has been the foundation of all international efforts in Kosovo, he stressed, adding that it is logical and in fact imperative" to see the international community stand on the implementation of the resolution before the consideration of the proposed UN plan on Kosovo.

In addition, the Council should get all the possible information on the situation in Kosovo before considering the proposal, the Russian ambassador said in regard to the second suggestion.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday conveyed to the UN Security Council a report and a proposal by his special envoy for Kosovo, who recommends "supervised independence" for the Serbian province, a step strongly opposed by Serbia.
