UNITED NATIONS, March 25 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday called for the resumption of negotiations on Iran's nuclear issue, a day after the UN Security Council adopted a key resolution imposing tougher sanctions on the Islamic republic.

The secretary-general "believes that a negotiated solution would strengthen the international nonproliferation regime and hopes that dialogue will resume," said a statement issued by his spokesperson.

The UN chief hailed the council's unanimous vote in adopting Resolution 1747 and called on Iran to "fully implement the resolution's provisions and to urgently take the necessary steps to restore the international community's trust that its nuclear program is peaceful in nature."

The resolution, cosponsored by Britain, France, and Germany, calls for a ban of Iranian arms exports, a freeze of assets of an additional 28 individuals and entities involved in Iran's nuclear and missile programs.
