MANILA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Bulusan Volcano in central Philippines showed increased activity on Thursday as a handful of high-frequency volcanic earthquakes jolt the area frequently, local media reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that four high frequency quakes were noted in the past 24 hours, noting that steaming was also observed atop the crater, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

The volcano started to act up anew on Tuesday following a long hiatus, said the report.

On Tuesday, the volcano emitted voluminous white to dirty white steam clouds that rose up to 800 meters above the summit.

In the past week, a total of 23 high frequency quakes were observed, prompting the Phivolcs to renew its calls on the public to stay out of the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone because that area is at risk from sudden steam/ash explosions.

The Phivolcs maintains Alert Level 1 over Bulusan Volcano.

Bulusan, Luzon's southernmost volcano, is an active stratovolcano. The last time it manifested restiveness was last December.
