BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Intellectuals from all walks of life are responding to Chinese President Hu Jintao's call for them to participate in building a harmonious society.

    The building of a harmonious society is a great cause that will benefit the people, said Hu, and the masses will only take part init when they realize its benefits.

    Hu made the remark on March 7 at a meeting of political advisors from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Communist Youth League, the All-China Youth Federation and the All-China Women's Federation.

    "Hu's words made clear that only those who make contributions are entitled to enjoy the fruits of social development and no one has the right to deprive them of it." said Cai Changshui, professor with the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.

    The people are both the main force behind the construction of a harmonious society and the chief beneficiary of it, said China Renmin University professor Zhuang Fuling.

    An Guoqi, vice director of China Youth Research Center, said Hu's call reiterates young people's responsibilities in building a harmonious society.
