Special report: Internal situation in Palestine

GAZA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The first challenge facing the new Palestinian coalition government is how to end security chaos in the Palestinian territories, a spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday.

Nabil Abu Rudaina made the remarks after Abbas approved the formation of the unity government.

Overcoming the disorder and restoring security in the Palestinian territories should be first tackled by the government,Rudaina said.

He added that lifting siege on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) would be another challenge facing the coalition government.

The embargo has been imposed on the Palestinians since the outgoing Hamas-led administration took office last March which refused to comply with demand to recognize Israel.

On Feb. 8, Hamas and Fatah reached a power-sharing deal in Saudi holy city of Mecca to form a national unity government which ended months of infighting.

Though the program of the new government did not frankly adopt the Quartet demand of recognizing Israel, the platform expressed readiness to "respect" international resolutions.
