    BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A netizen by the name of Xi Huchenghe said that the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, has made great progress in promoting democracy over the past year.

    He said adhering to two major themes of unity and democracy, the CPPCC National Committee and all CPPCC local committees have played a great role in political consultations, democratic supervision, and participating in discussing state affairs.

    The netizen praised them for paying closer attention to people's livelihood, and helping the Communist Party of China and the government resolve the public's concerns and solve pressing issues concerning their interests by making innovations and investigations.

    He said that their work will greatly promote China's reforms, opening-up and socialist modernization.

    China has a population of 1.3 billion, a weak economic foundation and undeveloped productive forces. It is, therefore, vital to pool people's wisdom to deal with the problems cropping up in development.

    The political consultative system, considered a unique creation, can concentrate efforts of the whole country, including non-communist parties, to govern the nation jointly, the netizen noted.

    As the most extensive patriotic united front, people's political consultative conference always attaches the utmost importance to safeguarding the people's fundamental interest in carrying out its work. As a result, it has been playing a major role in promoting the building of a harmonious society.

    All members of the CPPCC National Committee have been busy with voicing the people's concerns.

    According to Huang Mengfu, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the committee has received 5,158 proposals since the fourth session held a year ago, with 4,999 placed on file.

    Of the figure, 4,742 proposals were submitted by CPPCC National Committee members, and 201 by eight non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.

    Specifically, 4,742 proposals involved economic issues, 1,488 dealt with science, technology, culture, health and sports, 1,259 were relative to politics, laws and social security. These proposals were submitted to 166 departments for handling.

    CPPCC, which serves as a bridge, plays a great role in coordinating various relationships, concentrating all kinds of forces, making proposals to the government, and serving the country's central tasks, the netizen said.

    This is conducive to achieving harmony in relations between various parties, various ethnic groups, in religious relations, and in relations between Chinese compatriots at home and those residing overseas, he said.

    Moreover, this also helps non-Communist parties and people without party affiliation to participate in discussing political affairs, to maintain prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and to enable cross-Straights relations to develop in the direction of peace and stability.

    The netizen expressed the belief that by uniting people from all walks of life and through the united front, CPPCC will certainly accomplish a great deal in China's socialist modernization drive and in helping invigorate the Chinese nation.
