Special report: Iran Nuclear Crisis

¡¤"We don't welcome (UN) to adopt another resolution," government spokesman Elham said.¡¤"Suspension is completely impossible and cannot be brought up," Elham said.
¡¤Elham said "we will give a serious and firm response as called for by circumstances."

TEHRAN, March 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian official on Tuesday kept defiance toward further sanctions by the United Nations Security Council, vowing Tehran would not suspend the sensitive uranium enrichment work.

"We don't welcome (UN) to adopt another resolution, but there's no need to worry," government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham told a press conference.

"Suspension is completely impossible and cannot be brought up, they have already given up this; in this respect, sanction is not new and will have no effect on people's progress," he added.

Meanwhile, the spokesman urged the UN Security Council to move reasonably on Iran's nuclear case because other options, sanctions in particular, would only complicate the current situation.

When asked about the looming threat of a military attack on Iran, Elham said "we will give a serious, firm and appropriate response as called for by circumstances."

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1737 on Dec. 23, 2006, demanding Iran stop all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities including research and development and work on all heavy water-related projects in 60 days.

Iran refused to heed the Security Council's demand by the deadline that fell on Feb. 21, 2007.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Britain, the United States, France, China and Russia, plus Germany have been discussing further measures against Iran's hardline stance.
