MADRID, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Spaniards on Sunday held rallies in memory of
the 191 people killed three years ago in train bombings in Madrid.
"Memory, dignity and Justice" was among slogans witnessed at the
commemorative gatherings called by the Terrorist Victims Association in major
cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valladolid and Jaen.
In Madrid's De La Villa Place, the rally began with a three-minute silence
for all of Europe's terror victims.
To the accompaniment of music by Paul Casals, Spain's royal family formally
unveiled a monument in memory of those who died at the Atocha Station.
The monument, an 11-meter glass dome over a room of 500 square meters,
houses messages of support from all parts of the world. It is the work of young
architects and has been named the Fascinante Aroma a Manzana (Enthralling Smell
of Apples).
Other dignitaries at the gathering included Prime Minister Jose Luis
Rodriguez Zapatero, Esperanza Aguirre, president of the autonomous community of
Madrid, and Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon.
In nearby El Retiro Park, a garden of remembrance has been erected to honor
the victims.
On March 11, 2004, terrorists targeted four trains at Atocha Station in
Madrid, killing 191 people and injuring 2,000 others.
