MEXICO CITY, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The National Defense Department said Tuesday it will re-enlist a group of HIV-positive soldiers following the Supreme Court ruling that their expulsion was unlawful.

    In an announcement, the department said the HIV-affected soldiers could continue their duties as long as they do not further endanger their health and are medically fit for their tasks.

    It assured that the soldiers would be provided with adequate care and psychological help and would not be discriminated.

    Last week, the court prohibited the armed forces from discharging troops with HIV or AIDS, saying that the expulsion was unconstitutional.

    It is reported that the decision would trigger more court cases for about 300 Mexican military personnel dispelled for HIV-infection.

    Top officials in the military have reviewed nearly all 11 cases submitted to the court and will readmit the living claimants of those cases.

    According to medical experts, properly treated HIV patients pose no risk of infecting others with HIV as the AIDS virus only spreads through drug use and sexual contact.

    Mexico has a relatively low HIV infection rate, according to statistics from the United Nations.
