    Hu: harmony, stability prerequisite for Tibet development

    BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Monday that to maintain a harmonious and stable society is a prerequisite for the development of Tibet and the well-being of all ethnic groups living there.

    Emphasis should be laid on improving the living and working conditions of farmers and herdsmen, so that they can share the achievements of China's reform and development, said Hu while joining a panel discussion of Tibetan legislators at the ongoing annual session of the Tenth National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.

    China's parliament chief calls for efforts to address people's top concerns

    BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo Monday urged governments and officials to address people's top concerns and meet their pressing demands in a bid to build a socialist harmonious society.

    Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the calls at a panel meeting of the top legislature which started its annual session Monday morning.

    Chinese senior leader stresses issues of agriculture, countryside, farmers

    BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong on Monday urged local authorities to put the issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers on top of their agenda.

    Local governments should further speed up the modernization of agriculture and push forward the building of new countryside with down-to-earth steps, said Zeng at a panel discussion by deputies who came from east China's Jiangxi Province to attend the parliament's annual session.

    Senior CPC leader urges Beijing to make good preparation for Olympics

    BEIJING, March. 5 (Xinhua) -- Beijing should make good preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games in 2008, said Jia Qinglin, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Monday.

    Jia, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a panel discussion of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.
